Unlike all forms of recreational diving, technical diving goes beyond the limit of relative safety. Although the term itself is new enough, divers all over the world have been practicing technical diving at least since the 1970s. As far as the exploration of deep sea, caves or wrecks goes, technical diving is unprecedented in both the complexity of equipment and the level of skill required.
While the exact definition of technical diving might be debatable, colloquial use of the term usually covers more extreme versions of wreck diving, cave diving, sidemount diving or any type of dive occurring deeper than 40 meters below the surface of the sea.
Diving with caution
If we say that all divers must adhere to safety rules, it is all the more true when it comes to a technical dive. Pretty much all of technical diving routinely involves regular decompression stops that serve to prevent the risk of so-called decompression sickness. The use of gas mixtures is also typical for this type of diving, as the usual oxygen could become toxic to the body in greater depths.
Since restricted visibility is very commonplace in technical diving, additional equipment is often required to help the diver find their way out of a dark and largely enclosed area. Because of the high risks most diving schools don’t actually offer courses in extreme forms of diving, however it is possible to find specialized instructors who will introduce experienced divers to technical diving.
